Queensland Law Society president Christine Smyth has welcomed the appointment of former solicitor and current Senior Member of the Queensland Civil and Administrative Tribunal (QCAT), Peta Stilgoe OAM as a member of the Land Court of Queensland.
“On behalf of the profession I congratulate Ms Stilgoe on her new appointment, she is more than eminently qualified and experienced for the role,” she said.
“Our community benefits greatly when the Government appoints solicitors who have the technical expertise and people skills necessary for commissions and judicial office.
“It increases the intellectual rigour and humanises our justice system.
“I congratulate the Attorney-General for her foresight in choosing appointments from the solicitor’s branch of the profession.”
“We are 11,000 strong, with an unmatched wealth and depth of expertise that enables us to contribute to society through service in a public office.
“Our solicitors are pillars of the communities in which they serve, and it is good to see one of our own meritoriously appointed.”
Ms Stilgoe has been involved with QCAT and Queensland Law Society throughout her career, and her latest appointment comes following consultation with Land Court President, Judge Fleur Kingham.
“The Society has consistently advocated for the appointment of solicitors to judicial positions, and I am sure there will be many more solicitors elevated to the bench in the future,” Ms Smyth said.
“I thank Ms Stilgoe for the great example she has set for our profession, and wish her all the best.
“As always, I stand ready to work with the Attorney-General on similarly commendable appointments.”
