Queensland Law Society has applauded the appointment of esteemed silk Walter Sofronoff as the state’s new Court of Appeal president.
Society president Christine Smyth said Mr Sofronoff was one of the most respected lawyers in Queensland and was an ideal replacement to take over as the chief judge of Queensland’s highest court.
“Mr Sofronoff is one of Queensland’s finest legal minds and is one of Australia’s most eminent and respected lawyers,” Ms Smyth said.
“We wholly support his appointment and anticipate he will be fiercely independent and lead the court with distinction.
“Mr Sofronoff has worked at the highest levels of litigation – both criminal and civil – including countless appearances before the High Court of Australia.’’
Queensland’s Attorney-General Yvette D’Ath announced Mr Sofronoff’s appointment on Friday (March 31) – saying he was one of Queensland’s most brilliant legal minds and a person of exceptional character and integrity.
After being called to the Bar in 1977, Mr Sofronoff took silk in 1988 and served as Queensland’s Solicitor-General between 2005-14.
He has also lead significant inquiries, including as Commissioner of the Grantham Floods Inquiry, and a review of Queensland’s Parole system.
“QLS applauds and supports Mr Sofronoff’s appointment and believes he will maintain the high standards our courts set and provide on a daily basis to all Queenslanders,’’ Ms Smyth said.
“It must have been a very difficult job for the Attorney-General considering the numerous other fine legal minds who have already distinguished themselves during their time on the bench.’’
Mr Sofronoff, QC, will take up his new role and will replace highly respected outgoing Court of Appeal President Justice Margaret McMurdo – who retired a week ago – on Monday.
