Queensland Law Society welcomes the Government’s announcement that all 140 recommendations in the Not Now, Not Ever report on domestic violence will be implemented.
The Society’s Not Now, Not Ever working group considered a number of legal profession initiatives in response to the review by Dame Quentin Bryce AD CVO, submitting them for consideration.
Queensland Law Society president, Michael Fitzgerald, is pleased to note four specific recommendations relating to the Society have been accepted for implementation.
“The issue of domestic violence is an important one for Queensland Law Society and top of mind for everyone in our community. Saving the life of a friend, sister, mother or even an acquaintance is no less important for the legal profession than it is for the wider community,” he said.
“The Society welcomes the inclusion of our recommendations and ongoing consultation. Our direct involvement with the consequences of domestic violence provides our members with a deep understanding of the ugly reality that can affect all Queenslanders at some time in their lives.
"We are honoured to help Queensland solicitors to understand their responsibilities in working with domestic violence victims and perpetrators.”
The Society will develop and implement best practice guidelines for lawyers working with people who have experienced domestic and family violence, along with providing relevant continuing professional development.
