Queensland Law Society president Michael Fitzgerald welcomes the announcement by the Attorney-General, Senator the Hon George Brandis QC, that a Federal Circuit Court judge will be based permanently in Rockhampton.

“The Society welcomes this announcement as a positive step for Rockhampton in ensuring the provision of easily accessible family law services in Central Queensland,” says Mr Fitzgerald.

“Commencing early in 2016, the new judge based in Rockhampton will also undertake circuits to Gladstone, Rockhampton, Bundaberg and Mackay, improving accessibility in those areas.”

Currently, those who require the services of the Federal Circuit Court, specifically in family law matters, either have to have their matters heard when a Federal Circuit Court judge travels to these cities, which is usually about seven weeks a year, or they must travel to Brisbane or Townsville. This decision will improve the accessibility and reduce costs for those in Central Queensland requiring court assistance.

This decision is the most significant for the city’s legal profession in the last 40 years.

The Society has been informed by its members that Federal Circuit Court judges have performed their duties in an outstanding fashion with significant time pressures. Judges have been squeezing work that could be fairly allocated to a 25-week block into their six-week allocation.

“Advocacy by the Central Queensland Law Association and its members, supported by Queensland Law Society, has proved to be a powerful force,” Mr Fitzgerald said.

“I applaud the efforts of all involved in securing this important result for the Central Queensland area.

“This truly is a wonderful announcement for the people of Central Queensland.

“This decision will assist families facing parenting, family law disputes and domestic violence in achieving justice without the added stress of financial costs and long delays.”
