Queensland Law Society president Michael Fitzgerald extends congratulations to Peter Delibaltas, Melanie Ho and Nerida Wilson on the announcement of their appointment as Queensland magistrates today.
“The Society welcomes the appointment of three new magistrates for the State of Queensland announced today,” says Mr Fitzgerald.
The Society makes special mention of Peter Delibaltas, who until the announcement was Legal Aid Queensland’s Criminal Law Services director. Mr Delibaltas has worked with the Society’s Criminal Law Committee on Society submissions relating to criminal law in Queensland.
Melanie Ho, a barrister who has been a prosecutor for the Commonwealth Director of Public Prosecutions, and Nerida Wilson, an experienced Cairns barrister who won the 2013 Women Lawyers Association of Queensland Regional Woman Lawyer of the Year Award, will bolster the magistracy in Queensland.
“All Queenslanders should be able to rely on a sustainably funded legal aid system and well-resourced courts and tribunals,” says Mr Fitzgerald.
“More magistrates improve access to justice for all Queenslanders. This is a particularly important announcement in light of our united community response to fighting the hideous crime of domestic violence.”
