Queensland Law Society has welcomed the Queensland Government’s announcement of an extra $3.7 million in funding over five years for local domestic violence support services.

Society president, Bill Potts praised today’s announcement of extra funding in Gladstone and surrounding areas.

“Central Queensland have some excellent services to provide support for those affected by domestic and family violence,” he said.

“This funding will enable local services to help more people access specialist counselling, information and support when they need it the most.

“These centres provide invaluable assistance to vulnerable Australians, and it is critical that they are able to help more people rather than turn them away due to a lack of funding.”

The funding will be received by Gladstone Women’s Health Centre, which will enable them to continue to provide services including counselling for adults and children, court support and coordination activities that will integrate local services more effectively. These services will also be delivered to the Banana Shire, including Biloela.

Additional funding will also be provided to services in Rockhampton, Emerald, Longreach, Bundaberg, Maryborough, Hervey Bay and South Burnett.

“The issue of domestic violence remains a focus for the Society and our community,” Mr Potts said.

“This announcement is an important step in the right direction. The Society also continues to call for sustainable and adequate funding for legal assistance providers to assist those in need.”

“We support services that will improve safety and wellbeing of victims and increase public awareness of domestic violence.”
