Cyber criminals successfully divert Qld Solicitor’s trust transfers
10 August 2017
Due to recent email based cyber attacks, the QLS Ethics Centre recommends that caution should be exercised by solicitors in the manner in which they receive instructions for the transfer of trust monies that may be received by email. Solicitors should further exercise caution before giving details of their trust account via email.
There have been a number of recent attacks on Trust Accounts using email interceptions. Firms which had no indication that their email had been compromised found that instructions to transfer money had been altered by outside attackers.
In one attack, email instructions to the solicitor were altered and he innocently deposited $200,000 into a fraudster’s account.
In another, $500,000 to be paid to trust was diverted by an altered email to a client.
