Queensland Law Society cautiously welcomes Narcotic Drugs Amendment Bill
16 February 2016
Queensland Law Society president Bill Potts today gave a cautious welcome to the introduction of the much-awaited Narcotic Drugs Amendment Bill 2016.
“Queensland Law Society has a long-standing commitment to evidence-based policy-making. There is a great deal of evidence supporting the use of medicinal cannabis, but the challenge is to get the regulation right,” said Mr Potts.
“As a criminal lawyer, I have seen the dark side of cannabis use, which can have dire consequences. Governments would do well to be informed by experiences in jurisdictions which have already taken this step.
“Properly implemented, however, the production and use of medicinal cannabis will bring relief to many people. Legalising medicinal use should prevent otherwise law-abiding people from contact with the criminal justice system.”
