Symmetry in Chief Justice’s Governor appointment
26 February 2014
Queensland Law Society today warmly welcomed the Premier’s announcement that Chief Justice Paul de Jersey will become the state’s next Governor.
President Ian Brown congratulated the Chief Justice and said Queensland Law Society was immensely pleased with the appointment.
“The role of Queensland Governor requires outstanding integrity, diplomacy and commitment to service,” Mr Brown said.
“The Chief Justice has an impeccable record of exhibiting these traits in court and the administration of the judiciary.
“He is particularly well loved in the regions where he is active in his circuit court duties and where he provides support and guidance for the profession.”
“The Chief Justice has been instrumental in the modernisation of our justice system, including overseeing the implementation of the Moynihan reforms.
“The role of Governor of Queensland is critical for the effective functioning of government and our democracy as well as being an ambassador for our wonderful State.
“As Governor, the Chief Justice will play a central role in the smooth administration of government legislative, electoral and democratic processes.
“The Chief Justice heads one of the cornerstone institutions of our democracy since 1998 and there is a pleasing symmetry in knowing he will soon be the head of another.
“We commend Governor Penelope Wensley on upholding the office of Governor of Queensland with honour, grace and dignity.”
