Historic changes to youth justice
14 February 2018
An historic and long-awaited change to the youth criminal justice system commenced this week, with 17-year-olds now treated as children in the youth justice system, transitioning out of the adult criminal justice system from 12 February 2018.
View QLS’s Facebook Live event where Damian Bartholomew, Deputy Chair of the Society’s Children’s Law Committee, discussed the changes in detail.
More resources are now available to assist practitioners working with 17-year-olds as they transition into the youth justice system.
The Youth Justice and Other Legislation (Inclusion of 17-year-old Persons) Amendment Act 2016, transitional regulation, and guides for legal stakeholders are all available on the Queensland Department of Child Safety, Youth and Women’s website.
