The Queensland Law Society Diversity & Inclusion Awards are designed to recognise individuals, in-house teams, departments and firms that embrace the changing nature of the profession and promote positive firm cultures that celebrate diversity of thought.

Equity Advocate Award

This award recognises individuals or team from a legal practice who have successfully promoted equity and diversity in the legal profession whether by way of:

  • Effective and innovative initiative(s) within the workplace to generate positive change
  • The individual’s or team’s activities in the wider profession and / or the community.

2018 award winner - Terrence Stedman

Terry is a descendant of the Kamilaroi people. He completed school at Corinda High School and became a trade qualified Plumber and Gas Fitter. He subsequently became a Prison Officer and worked in the notorious Boggo Road Gaol and as a Commissioner of the Queensland Corrective Services Board. He also went on to work in Gaols in NSW, and joined the law profession later in life, when he graduated from Griffith University in 2005. After working as an Associate Lecturer, Terry returned to Inala where he grew up and began a 10 year career as a solicitor with South West Brisbane Community Legal Centre. He has volunteered on numerous boards providing a significant contribution to the community.


Large & Medium Legal Practice Award

Presented to a legal practice with 20 or more solicitors that promote sustainable, healthy workplace cultures in the profession, engage in inclusive and equitable workplace practices and embrace workplace diversity in a meaningful way. 

2018 award winners - Maurice Blackburn Lawyers

Presented to a legal practice with 19 or fewer solicitors that promote equity in the profession, engage in inclusive and equitable workplace practices and embrace workplace diversity in a meaningful way.
