Law Week promotes law's strength
Queensland Law Society was involved in a number of events in Law Week 2013, held 13-19 May. These events presented current issues to stakeholders and the public, promoted the profession’s important role to the community, and celebrated our professional pride with our members.
On Tuesday 14 May we were a sponsor of, and took part in, the QPILCH Walk for Justice at the Brisbane Courts Precinct on George Street that raised nearly $40,000 for pro bono justice services.
That afternoon we hosted the Perspectives on Policy forum, discussing current legislative issues with key stakeholders.
On Friday night, the more than 330 legal professionals and guests kicked up their heels at the QLS Annual Ball. The masquerade theme unmasked plenty of solicitor creativity in dress and accessories.
Our final event of the week was Saturday’s Law Week Open Day 2013, held for the first time at the new Queen Elizabeth II Courts of Law and Magistrates Court buildings. There were plenty of free family-friendly activities on offer, with our two criminal history presentations of The darker side of our sunny city presented to over 80 people. The first presentation was particularly popular with barely a spare seat in the Court of Appeal.
To keep the spirit of Law Week alive, Radio National’s Law Report will continue to air Queensland-inspired stories. This week will feature an interview we facilitated with the Bundaberg Law Association on flood recovery. Make sure to tune in at 5:30pm, Tuesday 21 May to hear about immediate and ongoing legal issues post-natural disasters.
