Practice Management Advice and Support

The QLS Legal Practice Consultant assists members on a range of practice management issues including business development and marketing, client service, risk management, supervision arrangements, quality management, practice structure, costs and billing, profitability, fee-earner retention, and more

Trust and General Account Assistance

QLs can assist members in their understanding of the legislative and operational requirements of administering a trust account by:

  • providing an overview of the legislative requirements of trust accounting processes;
  • a voluntary questionnaire to assist practitioners to comply with their legislative obligations; and
  • an audit program to guide accountants to properly discharge their duties when externally examining solicitors' trust accounts.

Practice Certificate and Regulatory Advice

QLS can assist members with information concerning their requirements on their firm's obligations with respect to practising certificates, the Practice Management Course, Continuing Professional Development, and related matters including entity structures. Appropriate Management Systems Guidance for ILPs and MDPs Information

Under regulations in the LPA2007, practices converting to ILP or MDP status are required to implement and keep 'appropriate management systems'. As part of an 'education towards compliance' strategy agreed with the Legal Services Commission (LSC), Queensland Law Society offers advice and guidance to practices on the development and implementation of appropriate management systems. This is a free service, phone (07) 3842 5853.

QLS provides a free legal advice service for its members who have received an official notification requesting they provide information to either the Legal Services Commission or QLS in relation to a complaint investigation or trust account matter. members under investigation can obtain expert advice for up to three hours from an experienced solicitor who has extensive knowledge of professional standards issues.

QLS also offer management assistance to assist practitioners identify any underlying weaknesses in their management arrangements that contributed to any failings, and assist in implementing systems or arrangements to help avoid complaints or concerns in the future.
