Accommodating persons with disabilities in the workplace

Mr Larry Laikind will take himself as an example to discuss accommodating a solicitor with a visual disability in the workplace. The presenter will focus on:

  • the presenter’s disability and work history
  • the work carried out by the Welfare Rights Centre
  • equipment that enables a person with a visual disability to function such as the optical scanner that quickly reads typed documents (eye pad solo that will be demonstrated), the I flex that enables to read handwriting and write fairly legibly, the large screen computer with Zoom text and Jaws to enlarge and read the contents of the computer screen, a mobile phone with a talking program and a small portable enlarging device (Compact)

The second presenter Mr Michael Sheppard will discuss the following:

  • the prevailing attitudes that makes it difficult for a disable person to succeed in a firm environment
  • ways in which others could assist a person with a disability in the workplace without engendering embarrassment

Contextual and personal factors that contribute to achieving successful work-life balance

This session will focus on the results of the work-life balance survey in which members of the Queensland Law Society participated. Key topics for discussion in this session include:

  • the benefits of achieving work-life balance for individuals and organisations
  • what are the factors within organisations that contribute to achieving work-life balance?
  • what differentiates individuals who achieve the perception of work-life balance from those who do not?
