The Tao Of Everest: Climbing your way to leadership
Overview
1 CPD points
Ian Woodall is one of few people in the world who has planned and led five expeditions to Mount Everest, reaching the summit by both its south and north faces. He has survived the worst recorded storm in Everest history (in which one of his fellow climbers perished) and has had to make life and death decisions on the mountain to secure the safety of his team.
Members are provided a rare opportunity to attend an inspiring seminar to hear Ian discuss the triumphs and tragedies of climbing Mount Everest. Ian will show how insights gained on the mountain can inform core skills for organisational success such as leadership, teamwork and raw determination. This motivational event offers a unique perspective on how to face and overcome challenges to reach any mountainous goal – whether literal or figurative.

In a totally unique and dramatic keynote address, Ian brings amazing and awe inspiring moments of conquering the highest mountain directly to his audience and shows how lessons learnt on the mountain can be applied to enhance leadership, problem solving, and personal development skills. Ian delves into detail about being trapped at 8000 metres, the mountain’s fearsome “Death Zone”, in the worst storm in Everest history. Shrieking winds, zero visibility and plummeting temperatures saw one of Ian’s fellow climbers’ perish. Nevertheless, he pushed on and led his remaining team to reach the summit despite the trauma and tragedy that had unfolded around them. Two years later while attempting the north side of Everest Ian stopped only a few hundred metres below the summit to try and help a dying American climber. “Don’t leave me” she begged. “Please don’t leave me.” In treacherous terrain and temperatures below minus 30C, Ian had little choice. He had to leave her to secure the safety of his own team. Nine years later Ian returned to 8 600 metres on the north side of Everest to bury the woman he had been forced to leave behind. After wrapping her in the stars & stripes, he slid her gently down the north face to join her beloved husband lying somewhere below. From Ian you will learn the three key insights to successful leadership; why trust is a leadership necessity, why leadership means recognising the achievements of others and how integrity forms the foundation of all leadership. This is an event not to be missed by business leaders. |
