Practical Legal Ethics 6 CPD points

As an early career lawyer you may often face ethical dilemmas and not be aware of your ethical responsibilities or know how to handle them. This competency-based training module will provide you with hands-on practice at identifying and resolving various actual and potential ethical dilemmas, as well as the opportunity to explore and discuss your ethical duties to clients, colleagues and the courts.

  • Ethical responsibilities and the Lawyer’s Compass
  • Identifying and handling conflict of interests and duties
  • Common ethical issues for early career lawyers
  • Ethical issues in the use of technology and social media
  • Influence of organisational factors on ethical behaviour
  • Consequences of unethical behaviour
  • Competency assessment and commitment to action.

By the end of the session you will be able to:

  • Describe the ethical obligations and duties of a responsible lawyer
  • Identify stakeholders and ethical dimensions and duties in a particular situation
  • Identify and describe appropriate actions to resolve an ethical issue
  • Identify potential or actual conflicts in a given situation, as well as actions to address
  • Demonstrate professional courtesy in dealings with other legal professionals
  • Explain the process and consequences for dealing with unethical behavior.

About the Facilitators:

Stafford Shepherd, Senior Ethics Solicitor, Queensland Law Society

Stafford provides guidance on a wide range of ethical matters to Queensland legal practitioners on a daily basis. With a background in legal practice commencing in 1987, Stafford is able to draw on his practical experience as well as his in-depth knowledge of ethical matters. Stafford holds a Master of Laws (Commercial and Corporate), a Certificate in Arbitration and Mediation from the University of Adelaide and is a Graded Arbitrator.

Josephine Webb, Learning & Development Consultant, Queensland Law Society

Josephine is an experienced trainer and facilitator currently involved in the implementation of the Society’s Learning and Development Strategy. With a background in education, psychology and instructional design, Josephine combines a focus on learning excellence with a high level of practical interactivity and learner engagement.
