With an overwhelming response of nearly 200 posters, the Queensland Law Society is in no doubt that the students of Queensland are aware of the law in their communities.
The posters were the result of the annual Law Week Poster Competition, run by the Queensland Law Society’s Schools and Community Education Service (SCES) and calls for students in both primary and secondary school to design a poster using the theme ‘linking you and the law’.
Mareeba State High School Year 10 student, Krystal Tyter was the overall winner of this year’s competition with her creative mixed media entry, and her poster will become the official Queensland Law Society Law Week poster, to be displayed during Law Week (10-16 May 2008).
Coordinator of the Schools and Community Education Service, Ms Calista Bruschi said the concept of the poster competition was to engage students in learning more about the law.
“The Schools and Community Education Service is about breaking down the barriers to learning about the law and the Law Week Poster Competition is a fun way to embrace the role of the law in your community,” Ms Bruschi said.
Winners for each category in both primary and secondary school were chosen, with consideration given to originality of the poster, its design and creativity, and effectiveness based on the theme. The task of choosing the Queensland Law Society’s official Law Week poster was a challenge as there were a number of quality entries.
“Krystal’s entry demonstrated good use of artistic design and really demonstrated to the judging panel how the law connects to the community,” Ms Bruschi said.
The poster will also be used in a number of promotional materials for the Queensland Law Society’s Schools and Community Education Service, and will feature on the SCES website.
Mr Peter Apel of the QLS Far North Queensland District Law Association will present Miss Tyter with her award.
