Queenslanders risk losing right to trial by jury
09 February 2010
QLS President Peter Eardley has said in a statement to the media that proposed reforms to the Queensland justice system could remove the right to a trial by jury, lead to miscarriages of justice and increase costs.
Mr Eardley has outlined concerns that the State Government is ‘cherry-picking’ some key elements from the Moynihan Report on the reform of the justice system, while ignoring other essential safeguards it suggested.
The QLS Criminal Law and Litigation Rules Sections have prepared a substantial submission for the Attorney-General detailing the Society’s objections to the Government’s Civil and Criminal Jurisdiction Reform and Modernisation Amendment Bill 2009.
