Wellbeing & Depression
Recent years have seen a growth in concerning reports on the extent of demoralisation and depression amongst lawyers.
- 15% of respondents working in law firms had experienced moderate or severe depressive symptoms in the last week, compared to the average of 10.5% in general population (beyondblue/Beaton)
- 28 % of lawyers and students reported psychological distress severe enough to justify medical assessment, compared with 13 percent in the general population (Brain & Mind Institute, Sydney University)
Lawyers also have significantly higher rates of substance abuse and suicide than the general population.
