Appointment of former solicitor to senior judicial position very welcome: QLS
Queensland Law Society has applauded the recent appointments of former solicitor Justice Ann Lyons as Senior Judge Administrator and Judge Helen Bowskill QC as Supreme Court Justice.
“I am pleased to see a steady stream of appointments in recent months, with our justice system a key piece of social infrastructure for the community,” Society president Christine Smyth said.
“We applaud the elevation of a former solicitor to a senior judicial position, with Justice Lyons providing a great example for all solicitors.
“This appointment speaks to her expertise and impressive track record.”
Justice Lyons will take over from retiring Senior Judge Administrator Justice John Byrne AO RFD who will retire in August.
“I thank Justice Byrne for the 28 years he has served on the bench and look forward to seeing the great work that Justice Lyons will carry out in his stead,” Ms Smyth said.
“I also congratulate Judge Bowskill QC on her appointment and thank her for her service to the justice system thus far.”
Judge Bowskill QC was appointed to the District Court of Queensland in 2014 following her career as a barrister.
“Both appointments are yet another step forward to ensuring swift and effective justice for all Queenslanders through a well-resourced justice system,” Ms Smyth said.
“The Society will continue to advocate for better resourcing for our overworked courts, and I look forward to actively working with the government on further appointments.”
