Queensland Law Society has called on its members to take part in the annual Queensland Law Week walk to raise funds for much needed community mental health law practice.

Society president Bill Potts said at a time when community law centres were struggling to maintain sufficient government funding it was imperative the legal profession rally to ensure disadvantaged members of the community had access to justice.

He urged QLS members to register to participate in the annual Queensland Public Interest Law Clearing House walk on May 17 – which will raise money to fund a practice aimed at helping disadvantaged mental health patients.

"At a time when funding for CLCs is at tipping-point due to diminishing federal government support it is imperative members of the profession unite to say clearly and unequivocally that more needs to be done to ensure the most in need members of our community have access to justice," Mr Potts said.

"I strongly urge all QLS members to show their support for the great works of all CLCs by taking part in QPILCH’s Legal Walk."

The 2016 Brisbane 5km walk will be led by Queensland’s Chief Justice Catherine Holmes and Attorney-General Yvette D’Ath.

Walks will simultaneously start at 7am in Brisbane, the Gold Coast, Toowoomba, Mackay, Townsville, Cairns and the Sunshine Coast.

The Brisbane leg will commence at the Queen Elizabeth II Court Complex and travel along both sides of the Brisbane River before returning to the courts for a complimentary breakfast.

QPILCH and other local CLCs assisted 50,000 Queenslander last year, but had to turn 80,000 others away.

QPILCH in particular provides assistance to people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness, people with mental illness, refugees and self-represented litigants.

To register for the walk members should go to the QPILCH website – www.qpilch.org.au.
