QLS congratulates former president on appointment to Family Court
Queensland’s peak legal body has welcomed news of past Society president Judge Michael Baumann’s appointment to the Family Court of Australia.
Australia’s Attorney-General, Senator the Honourable George Brandis QC, announced yesterday (14 DEC) several new appointments across the Federal Courts.
Judge Baumann is currently a Judge of the Federal Circuit Court and has practised in the legal profession since his admission in 1979.
Queensland Law Society president Christine Smyth has voiced her congratulations to Judge Baumann as a fellow QLS president, and reiterated the importance of appointing solicitors to the bench.
“This appointment is welcome news, with Judge Baumann commencing his career as a solicitor, and moving his way up the ranks,” she said.
“It is also an added joy that he is a past president – having served the Society from 1993 until 1994 – and a past presenter at Society events in the years following.
“Queensland solicitors number over 13,000, many of whom possess exceptional technical, advocacy and interpersonal skills, making them excellent judicial candidates.
“Our communities benefit when we provide them with diversity on the bench and the legal skill which our solicitors – who are at the frontline of legal services to the community – hold.”
Ms Smyth expressed her eagerness for the Society to continue working with the government of the day to ensure appointments to both state and federal courts continued to reflect the diversity of the legal profession.
