Queensland's peak lawyer group has joined the nation in mourning the tragic and senseless murder of highly respected Queensland Police Service officer Senior Constable Brett Forte in the line of duty on Monday.
Queensland Law Society President Christine Smyth said the state's more than 11,000 solicitors were deeply saddened, but brimming with pride in the way in which Constable Forte and his fellow QPS officers dedicated their lives every day to protect the community in which they serve and make it safer and more peaceful place for all to live.
"Words cannot rightly do justice to the great sadness and heartbreak we all feel for the senseless loss of a respected veteran officer and young dad murdered during a routine traffic stop," Ms Smyth said.
"It's a very sad day for everybody in the QPS, but I think it is also one of genuine sorrow for every Queenslander.
“Our hearts and thoughts go out to Constable Forte’s wife, children, his family, friends and members of the QPS family as they struggle though such a difficult time.
“Many QLS members work closely and have forged long and lasting personal and professional relationships with many QPS officers in their daily professional dealings and Constable Forte’s passing cuts as deeply into the QLS family as it does the wider community."
Ms Smyth said Constable Forte’s passing had rightly sent shockwaves through a community that has enormous respect for and support of its men and women who tread the thin blue line and risk their lives and personal safety in a bid to make Queensland a safe and secure place to live.
“Constable Forte’s death demonstrates the danger police put themselves in every day to safeguard the community," Ms Smyth said.
"Any death is a tragedy, but the death of a police officer during the execution of his or her duty and attempting to help those in danger is particularly devastating.
“Constable Forte’s passing should stand as a reminder and a testament of the dedication and commitment every serving police officer makes as they head out to work each day."
