Queensland Law Society has welcomed the appointment of highly-respected silk and Supreme Court Justice Martin Daubney to the role of Queensland Civil and Administrative Tribunal president.

Society president Christine Smyth said the legal profession would be unanimous in its agreement that Justice Daubney would be a great servant to the people of Queensland in his new role.

“On behalf of the profession I congratulate his Honour for his appointment and think everyone will agree he is more than eminently qualified and experienced for his new role,” Ms Smyth.

“Justice Daubney, in his new role, will hear matters pertaining to legal professional disciplinary matters and QLS could not ask for a fairer jurist to handle such matters.’’

Ms Smyth said Justice Daubney was likely to bring a measured and “common touch" to QCAT.

“During his time at the Bar he was known as a common silk and a real man of the people," Ms Smyth said.

“QCAT is the people’s jurisdiction, and the people of Queensland can be confident of being given even treatment if they appear before the Tribunal."

Justice Daubney replaces Justice David Thomas – who left to take up the position of president of the federal Administrative Appeals Tribunal.

Ms Smyth’s comments follow Queensland Attorney-General Yvette D’Ath’s announcement on Friday (Oct 6) of Justice Daubney’s appointment to QCAT.
