Appointment of FCC judge for Townsville delivered at last

Queensland’s peak legal group has welcomed the appointment of barrister Guy Andrew as a permanent judge of the Federal Circuit Court in Townsville (FRI 22 MAR).

Queensland Law Society President Bill Potts said Judge Andrews was an excellent appointment to the court and he was pleased to see the appointment made.

“I congratulate Judge Andrews on his appointment, and I thank the Government for filling the position which had been vacant since Judge Steve Middleton ceased sitting in Townsville on 8 February,” he said.

“We have been urging the Government to replace Judge Middleton for the past month, to ensure that the Townsville community does not get left behind.

“Appointments must be swift and transparent, to ensure the local caseload does not back up.”

Mr Potts said that he hoped to see more local appointments of solicitors in the regions into the future.

“Our solicitors are hard-working advocates for justice in their local communities, and I hope to see more appointments from the solicitors’ branch into the future,” he said.

“Our local solicitors bring a wealth of local knowledge and respect from the community into any roles they may fill.

“As always, QLS stands ready to assist the Government with future appointments and we congratulate Judge Andrew on his new position.”
