Expert assistance pilot commencing 2 July 2018
27 June 2018
In 2013, the Queensland Child Protection Commission of Inquiry in its final report, Taking Responsibility: A Roadmap for Queensland Child Protection, recommended that Department of Justice and Attorney-General and the Chief Magistrate collaborate to develop and fund a pilot in which the Childrens Court can access expert assistance under section 107 of the Child Protection Act 1999.
Section 107 of the Child Protection Act 1999 enables the Childrens Court to appoint a person having a special knowledge or skill to help the court. The court may make an order appointing an expert on its own initiative or on the application of a party to the proceeding.
On 2 July 2018, the expert assistance pilot will commence in the Cairns and Beenleigh Childrens Court for complex child protection matters.
Supporting materials are being drafted by the Department of Justice and Attorney-General and will be provided to our members upon receipt.
