Office of Fair Trading compliance events

Each year the Office of Fair Trading (OFT) undertakes a targeted compliance monitoring and educational program across all industries it regulates.

This program provides an opportunity to gain a greater understanding of trader behaviour and assists with developing strategies to provide education and encourage industry compliance.

In 2015-16, programs targeting the retail sector have specifically looked at:

  • 'was/now' pricing
  • product placement
  • scanning items advertised at reduced prices
  • lay-bys.

Results showed that some retailers have unwittingly breached the Australian Consumer Law (ACL) in each of these areas.

To help traders understand the ACL, their responsibilities and what they need to do to be compliant in these areas, OFT is holding free educational workshops for the retail sector.
