Types of membership

Full membership

Full membership is available to Australian lawyers who hold a current Practising Certificate that allows them to practise as a solicitor in Queensland. Full membership is not available to those who engage in practice as, or in the manner of, a barrister or to Australian registered foreign lawyers.

Associate membership

Associate membership is open to Australian lawyers who are not legal practitioners; former solicitors; barristers; law practice employees; law lecturers; and to people with other appropriate qualifications or experience.

Associate members who are also members of ALPMA (Australasian Legal Practice Management Association) receive their associate membership fee for half price. If you are currently an associate member and you renew your membership from 5 May 2020, the discount will be automatically applied when you select ALPMA membership on the renewal form. If you are a new associate member, the discounted fee applies from 1 July 2020.

Student membership

Student membership is available to those who are currently undertaking any study that is designed to qualify them for admission as an Australian lawyer. It is available to currently enrolled university law students, recent law graduates or graduates who are undertaking practical legal training.

Honorary membership is offered — at the discretion of QLS Council — to members who have demonstrated substantial contribution to the legal profession in Queensland.
