Shine Lawyers

Shine Lawyers was founded more than 40 years ago in Toowoomba, by a lawyer who wanted to do things differently and believed in always putting his clients first.

Unwavering commitment to our clients

From our humble beginnings in a small country town, our firm has gone from strength to strength. But one thing has remained unchanged, and that is our unwavering commitment to our clients. At Shine, we have the opportunity to stand up for those who have been wronged and make a genuine difference in people’s lives. This is a privilege and an honour and we give everything we’ve got to ensure our clients achieve the best possible outcomes.

Our people

We employ dedicated professionals with a down-to-earth approach and a real passion for seeing justice served. Over the years, our people have fought numerous battles in and out of the courtroom on behalf of our clients, and we’ve won many landmark cases. We are also active in advocating for legislative change on behalf of everyday Australians to ensure their voice is heard. In the pursuit of justice for our clients, we are not afraid to rock the boat.

The Shine Group

Today, as part of Shine Corporate, we employ a team of approximately 850 people across Australia and New Zealand. Our people work across a range of practice areas including personal injury (motor vehicle accidents and workers compensation), superannuation and disability insurance, serious injury claims, dust diseases, abuse law, class actions, medical law, professional negligence, employment law, travel law, social justice, family law and more. In the last financial year, the Shine Group settled more than 6,000 cases on behalf of our clients and procured damages in excess of $600 million.

Career opportunities

Shine Lawyers’ clerkship and graduate programs give you the opportunity to work alongside our senior practitioners and accredited specialists, providing you with real insight into working as a lawyer in a plaintiff law firm. From day one, you will be actively involved in legal work which could involve client meetings, court attendance, meetings with experts and third parties, attendance at negotiation conferences, or drafting memos and legal documents. Our programs aim to give you the best possible start to your career by ensuring you are exposed to meaningful learning opportunities and have all the support you need to get ahead.

At Shine, the future is bright.

What it's like to work for us

The law is an incredibly rewarding profession, but we recognise it can be demanding. For this reason we create an environment that is flexible, friendly, personable, collegiate and professionally stimulating.

We work hard to enhance this culture through transparent, authentic communication, and by ensuring we are respectful and accountable to each other every day to provide an environment where our staff can grow personally and professionally.

Our clients are at the centre of everything we do; so it is not only the openness we demonstrate in our dealings with each other, but also the well-established and trusting relationships we have with our clients, which make Thomson Geer a great place to work.

Our wellbeing@work program supports employees to maintain a healthy, balanced lifestyle. We also have an active social committee and participate in various team sports, providing lots of opportunities to develop close relationships with your colleagues.

Our Clerkship & Graduate Programs

Our structured program allows clerks to learn through a combination of hands-on experience, training, coaching and observation. You will have a realistic, stretching introduction to the legal profession. How does this happen? From day one, you’ll be an active participant in the team, involved in all aspects of legal practice, and working directly with experienced practitioners.

Students who complete a clerkship with us will be eligible to be considered for a position in the firm’s next graduate program. In Brisbane, we offer the opportunity to complete a Supervised Workplace Traineeship consisting of two rotations through the firm's core practice groups. Comprehensive training is provided to allow you to meet all required competencies to gain admission to practice.

Who we are

W+K has one focus - we eat, breathe and sleep all aspects of insurance law. This singular focus means we are home to many talented lawyers that are leading industry experts. Our experience extends across a broad range of industry sectors including construction, financial services, cyber, directors and officers liability, health and sports.

Why W+K

Founded in 2002, W+K has grown from two partners to over 230 employees across offices in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, Auckland and Wellington.

You don't achieve this type of growth unless you have good foundations to attract talented people, continuously invest in their careers and maintain the culture to retain them. Our new graduate program plays a critical role in the success and evolution of our growing business. We understand that insurance isn't an area most graduates have firsthand experience in, so we have created a structured program that will let you delve into all aspects of what we do through formal and informal learning experiences. You will work alongside a senior lawyer or leading partner who will provide you with support and guidance at all stages. By the time you've finished your 12 month program with us you will never want to leave!

Our mentoring program is designed for solicitors and will cover insurance and litigation fundamentals 101. We are all about helping you develop and identify yourself as an insurance specialist. You will have access to both in-house and external training, conferences and workshops to ensure you have the tools you need to be successful at W+K.

You will be actively encouraged to pursue secondment opportunities in the Australian market, or in the international offices of our Legalign Global alliance partners, as part of our talent exchange program.

Culturally, it is important to us that you feel valued for your contribution. These are some of the ways we say thanks:

  • Above-market remuneration
  • A generous employee referral program
  • Flexible work arrangements
  • Involvement in our Community Footprint program through pro bono legal services and corporate social responsibility initiatives, allowing you to give back.
