KEYNOTE SPEAKERS

The Honourable Chief Justice Deborah Mortimer

In April 2023, Debbie Mortimer was appointed as the Chief Justice of the Federal Court of Australia. Chief Justice Mortimer is the fifth Chief Justice and the first female Chief Justice of the Federal Court. She was previously a judge of the Federal Court since 2013.

Prior to her appointments, Chief Justice Mortimer was a member of the Victorian Bar and was appointed Senior Counsel in 2003. Her practice included public law, anti-discrimination law, extradition and environmental law, and in all areas she acted for both applicants and respondents, for and against government, in state and federal jurisdictions including in the High Court.

Chief Justice Mortimer remains a Senior Fellow at Melbourne Law School, a member of the Advisory Board of the Centre for Comparative Constitutional Studies at Melbourne Law School, and a member of Board of Advisers for the Public Law Review.

Professor Edward Santow

Edward Santow is the Director - Policy & Governance at the Human Technology Institute (HTI), and Industry Professor - Responsible Technology at the University of Technology Sydney. His areas of expertise include human rights, technology and regulation, public law and discrimination law.

From 2016-2021, Ed was Australia's Human Rights Commissioner, where he led the Commission's work on AI & new technology; refugees and migration; human rights issues affecting LGBTIQ+ people; national security; and implementing the Optional Protocol to the Convention Against Torture. 

Ed is a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Law, a member of the World Economic Forum’s Global Future Council on Human Rights and the Fourth Industrial Revolution, and of the NSW Government AI Review Committee. He is a patron of the Refugee Advice + Casework Service and a Fellow of the Centre for Social Justice & Inclusion at UTS.

What topics will be covered?

The conference features opening and closing plenaries and six tracks of substantive law sessions across Family, Succession, Criminal, Property, Personal Injuries, and Commercial Law.

Will the conference be recorded?

All sessions will be recorded and available for purchase following the event. Attendees will receive a complimentary recording package of three one-hour core topics and a substantive law track of choice.

Will Symposium have an Event App?

Yes, attendees will be provided information via email prior to Symposium on how to access and download the event app. 

The event app includes the agenda, presenter profiles, sponsor and exhibitor information, the ability to ask questions and participate in live polls, and the ability to take notes and export/email to yourself.

How do I get there?

The Brisbane Convention & Exhibition Centre has three entrances.  The Main Entrance on the corner of Merivale & Glenelg Streets, the Grey Street Entrance, and the Exhibition Entrance at the corner of Melbourne & Merivale Streets.
