QLS Applauds Judicial Appointment of Glen Cranny and Other New Judges

Queensland Law Society congratulates Glen Cranny, a distinguished criminal lawyer and long-serving contributor to the Society, on his appointment as a District Court Judge.

He is among five judicial appointments announced by the Queensland Government today in addition to a $2.4 million budget boost to strengthen Queensland’s courts.

Nationally recognised by Doyles as a pre-eminent criminal defence lawyer, Mr Cranny has also made significant contributions to QLS, serving as chair of the Criminal Law Committee, a member of the inaugural Criminal Law Specialist Accreditation Committee, and as a Senior Counsellor.

In 2019, he received the Queensland Law Society President’s Medal for his outstanding commitment to access to justice, law reform, and community service.

QLS president Genevieve Dee said his appointment to the District Court of Queensland is a fitting acknowledgment of his contributions to the administration of justice.

“Glen is highly respected across Queensland’s legal profession. His decades of service on QLS policy committees and working groups reflect his commitment to advancing good law in our state,” she said

“This is a tremendous achievement and we congratulate Glen on this well-deserved recognition.”

She also paid tribute to the other judicial appointments announced today - Judge Dearne Firth, appointed to the District Court, and Stephen Kissick, Nicholas Brown and Rhianna Lee, appointed to the Magistrates Court.

Mr Kissick and Mr Brown will serve at Southport, while Ms Lee will join the Magistrates Court in Mount Isa.

“Each appointee brings distinguished experience and exceptional legal expertise to the bench, and we look forward to their contributions to the administration of justice in Queensland,” she said.

Attorney-General Deb Frecklington in a statement said the Mid-Year Fiscal and Economic Review allocated an additional $2.4 million annually to fund two extra judges and support staff for the Supreme and District Courts.

An additional Supreme Court appointment is expected early next year.
