QLS Welcomes Budget Boost

Queensland Law Society has welcomed the State Government’s investment in legal services and the courts in the 2026–27 State Budget.

Queensland Law Society has welcomed the State Government’s investment in legal services and the courts in the 2026–27 State Budget, recognising it as a significant and timely commitment to strengthening access to justice.

Some of the key items outlined by the Queensland Government in today’s budget include:

  • $11m over five years to appoint additional Supreme and District Court Judges
  • $29.3m over four years for judges and judicial support services to enable faster access to justice
  • $22.1m over four years to invest in digital systems to improve the timeliness and efficiency of court proceedings
  • $8.6m in 2026-27 to Legal Aid Queensland for the provision of legal support services
  • $6m over four years for the delivery of enhanced security across priority courthouses in Queensland
  • $10.6m over four years to enhance the capacity and capability of prosecution services and increase digital functionality
  • $14.8m over three years for Childrens Courts to ensure the timely and relevant advice in youth justice proceedings.

In addition to the $250 million announced by Attorney-General Deb Frecklington last week for a new Child Protection Commission, the budget includes additional funding of $186.6 million in 2026-27 to support an initial response to the Child Safety Commission of Inquiry recommendations focusing on reducing reliance on residential care settings.

QLS President Peter Jolly said in a state budget big on infrastructure spending, it was pleasing to see the justice system receive important investment.

“There are projects and initiatives in this budget that we believe will improve the delivery of justice across Queensland, which is a great result for our members and the Queensland community” Mr Jolly said.

“Investment across judicial resources, court support, digital capability, security and legal assistance services is critical to a functioning justice system.

“We welcome this funding boost, which will help deliver more timely, efficient and accessible justice for the community.”

Each year, the Queensland Law Society provides targeted funding priorities consideration as part of the State Budget process, focused on strengthening access to justice, supporting the legal profession, and improving outcomes for the community.

“This Budget reflects many of the priorities we have been calling for, including investment in safer, more modern courts, stronger digital systems, and the resources needed to keep the justice system moving,” he said.

“It’s a clear recognition that a well‑functioning justice system is critical to community safety and confidence.”

The Society will continue to work constructively with the Queensland Government and stakeholders to ensure these investments are effectively implemented and deliver meaningful, lasting benefits for Queenslanders.
