QLS welcomes youth bail support program

QLS welcomes the Queensland Government’s announcement of the Risk Response Bail program and the investment in intensive support for young people on bail and their families.

President Peter Jolly said investing in programs that support young people and address the underlying issues that lead to offending was the best way to improve community safety over the long-term.

“Programs that give young people and their support networks practical and timely support to understand and comply with bail conditions are an important part of preventing reoffending,” Mr Jolly said.

“Many of those in the youth justice system are dealing with complex challenges, including unstable housing, disrupted education, disability, trauma and family difficulties.

“Addressing underlying issues early gives young people the best chance to turn their lives around, and that makes our communities safer for everyone.

“We thank the Queensland Government for this initiative.”

Mr Jolly said the Society looked forward to seeing how the program is rolled out and implemented, particularly with availability in regional areas of the state,  and its impact on reoffending.

The Risk Response Bail program will be delivered statewide, with local providers and a focus on contact within 24 hours of a bail decision.
