Last night (FRI MAR 15) one of Queensland's top criminal lawyers – Glen Cranny – was presented with the prestigious Queensland Law Society President's Medal at the legal night of nights.
This annual award is presented to an experienced solicitor who embodies the spirit of justice, leadership and tradition, and the medal takes into account the span of the nominee's legal career.
Mr Cranny is a well-respected and active member of Queensland's legal profession, having spent more than two decades engaged in policy committees and working groups with the Society.
QLS President Bill Potts said that Mr Cranny had dedicated his career to advancing Queensland's legal profession and working for good law in the state.
"Glen is a true advocate for good policy in Queensland," he said.
"It's a pleasure to present him with this award, as he has worked tirelessly as part of our policy committees and working groups over the years to see good law for the public good."
Mr Cranny is also dedicated to assisting younger generations of lawyers, as a mentor and QLS Senior Counsellor, as well as a panel member who assists other lawyers with professional complaint matters.
"We have had Glen as one of our experienced and sage QLS Senior Counsellors for more than eight years now, where he is essentially a ‘phone-a-friend’ for other solicitors on matters ranging from technical questions, ethical queries or even mental health or bullying concerns," Mr Potts said.
"He is great at what he does day-in-day-out in the criminal law sphere – which I can say as a fellow criminal lawyer – and he has done his fair share of advising government departments and agencies."
With a career spanning community access to justice, law and policy reform, upholding the rule of law and administration of justice for Queenslanders, Mr Cranny was seen as a stand out amongst several high-calibre nominees.
Other awards presented on the night included the QLS Agnes McWhinney Award, a suite of equity and diversity awards, innovation in law and community legal centre member of the year acknowledgments. The full list of awards and winners can be found below:
