Queensland’s peak legal body has welcomed today’s (Tues Nov 26) passing of laws designed to stamp out the predatory practice of "claims farming’’ by unscrupulous operators trawling for personal injury claims.
Queensland Law Society President Bill Potts has welcomed the State Government’s passing of the Motor Accident Insurance and Other Legislation Amendment Bill – saying it is a law the Society had lobbied hard to secure.
"QLS called for these new laws and consulted heavily in framing the obligations. It is very pleasing to see them approved by Parliament,’’ Mr Potts said.
"QLS has consistently raised concern about the practice of claims farming and has led the charge to address it.
"We have maintained that we do not endorse claims farming for a long time. We have said that claims farming of any kind – be it directly or through a consultancy model – is unethical for solicitors.’’
"It is pleasing to see the Queensland Parliament taking action early to ensure our Queensland injury compensation schemes remain fair and affordable."
Queensland Law Society was consulted on the draft legislation, made submissions to the Parliamentary Committee Inquiry and appeared at the public hearing.
