Queensland’s peak legal body has applauded the state government’s significant funding commitment to provide access to justice for Queenslanders.
Queensland Law Society President Luke Murphy welcomed the five year commitment to provide $119 million in funding for the state’s Community Legal Centre (CLC) sector.
“The milestone of guaranteeing five years of funding allows CLCs to plan their operation and work toward meeting the increasingly overwhelming demand for their legal services,’’ Mr Murphy said.
“The funding announced today is a mixture of increased Federal and significantly increased Queensland Government support over the previous three year funding round ending in June this year."
Mr Murphy said that while the funding was very welcome – the demands for Queensland community legal centre services has never been higher since the global outbreak of the coronavirus.
“But there is no doubt this additional funding will go toward meeting that need as will further support from the Commonwealth Government as a part of the recovery package for the Australian economy,’’ he said.
