We're back with your monthly list of things to keep you occupied, informed, and entertained!
Parliament has rushed through new laws on preventative detention. Four former detainees across three states have been charged since about 150 non-citizens were released.
Dozens of people have rallied in Brisbane's CBD to decriminalise sex work, as Queensland's peak union body condemns the state government for failing to introduce a bill to do so before the end of the year.
The release of the Law Council of Australia’s 2022-2023 Equitable Briefing Policy Annual Report shows that targets are being met in terms of briefing rates, but much work remains to address the significant gender pay gap faced by women barristers.
As this season of The Callover comes to an end, we have a special guest in the studio - Walter Sofronoff KC.
Mr. Sofronoff has a formidable resume. He was called to the Bar in 1978, made silk ten years later, and went on to become the President of the Bar Association, the President of the Queensland Anti-Discrimination Tribunal, the Solicitor General of Queensland, and then, in 2017, the President of the Queensland Court of Appeal.
Since his retirement from the bench in 2022, Mr. Sofronoff has led the Commission of Inquiry into Forensic DNA Testing in Queensland and, most recently, the Board of Inquiry into the criminal justice system in the Australian Capital Territory.
On this episode of The Callover, he joins us to discuss the art of advocacy, the importance of professional ethics, and other lessons learned from his incredible career.
