Insight: Identity Crime (SBS)

Identity crime has been a big topic after the infamous Optus and Medibank data breaches last year. Even before these two sizeable breaches, one in four Australians were victims of identity crime, according to a survey by the Australian Institute of Criminology. In this episode, Insight talks to victims, hackers and digital rights activists about this issue.

Small businesses could be forced to protect customers' personal information, under government changes to Privacy Act

Speaking of data privacy, small businesses (annual turnover of $3 million or less) currently are not required to protect the personal information of their customers. The Attorney-General’s review of the Privacy Act has suggested this exemption should be scrapped, as small businesses are no longer low risk.


Is it ethical for lawyers to use AI tools like ChatGPT?

QLS Ethics and Practice Centre Special Counsel David Bowles argues that there is “no ethical impediment to appropriate use of artificial tools in practice.” He also predicts that courts are soon “to be inundated with error-ridden GPT-generate material from self-represented litigants,” so practitioners need to gain experience with the technology to stay up to date.
